Back in Green Valley

Our First Winter in AZ

This is the first time we have had a chance to be in Green Valley, Arizona during the winter, while all of the “Snow Birds” are in town. We must say that the increased population is very noticeable.

Although the weather is sunny, it is not particularly warm. The lows are in the 30s and highs still in the 60s some of the time. It is much better than very rainy Portland. Actually, since we are native Oregonians, the rain doesn’t really bother us.

The sunrises and sunsets are frequently beautiful, and I always have my trusty iPhone with me, hoping to capture some good images. Paul, on the other hand, enjoys going to the nearby pool twice a day. He starts with the morning group at 7:00 a.m. and goes back in the mid afternoon. That does give him two workouts a day.

One evening we drove into Tucson to meet friends for dinner. We have not spent much time in the downtown area so were pleased that the choice of restaurants was in the historic Congress Hotel. We learned, while there, that it was the place where Dillon was captured, and they were celebrating the anniversary of that event. By the way, the food in the award-winning Cup Café at the Congress Hotel was delicious.

Across from the Congress Hotel was the historic Tucson Railway Station. There are many freight trains that pass through every day, but the Amtrak trains coming from Las Angeles heading east only arrive every-other day or so. The same goes for the Amtrak trains from the east. The building is well kept and contains a deli, and a nice restaurant as well as the ticket office and waiting area. Since we arrived early for dinner, we had a chance to walk around and explore the station.

We are enjoying getting back with friends. I (Grace) have already taught two classes in Web Design at the Camera Club, and Paul continues to enjoy the pool. This week we had one of the presentations at the Camera Club’s Travelogue show. Ours was on our 2008 expedition to The Falkland’s, South Georgia and Antarctica. There are many more events planned and scheduled in the weeks before we head home.

All for now,
Grace and Paul Pitzer
